Dune: The Battle For Arrakis

The OG RTS

Genre: strategy - rts

Publisher: Virgin Interactive

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

I enjoy playing this game despite its obvious deficiencies. Among them is the inability to select multiple units at once which makes offense incredibly tricky. However, the menus for building units are intuitive and easy to use. Controls are resistive. I wish a unit would remain being selected after giving it a command but you just have to select them again quickly. Addictive gameplay imo

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Short missions slowly introduce your various capabilities. Difficulty ramps up gradually.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

As a kid I had no idea this was based on a book. I enjoyed the characterizations of the Atreides and Harkonnens via the pre and post mission cutscenes.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Very simple graphics with poor animation and very little detail. They have a clear visual language - orang is for mining, green blue and red are the three houses, etc.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Love the death sound when units are killed. Music is simple but enjoyable.

Overall Score: 79
