Dynamite Duke for Genesis

Dynamite Duke

Wild Guns meets Operation Wolf

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1990

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

This is one of those pick up, play for 10 mintues, then put back on the shelf games. It's fun for a short bursts but not something I'd play for for long. Standard scrolling gallery shooter ala Operation Wolf, T2: the Arcade Game, Lethal Enforcers, etc. The difference is that your character is on screen so rather than shooting projectiles to avoid damage you instead have to move your character. Enemies fire slow moving bullets that you can avoid by either moving laterally or by ducking. Unfortunately there's no dash/dodge button like NAM 1975 or Wild Guns. Hard to avoid damage. Humongous sprite and very slow movement. Difficulty ramps up quickly. Level 3 on are way too hard. Shoot most enemies but end level bosses become a Punch Out fight. Pretty fun dynamic.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

I enjoyed the different locales it throws at you and the mid- and end-level bosses. Enemies take up interesting postures like laying prone or hiding behind obstacles. For a game like this I think it does a good job of mixing things up.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Well obviously you're playing as Arnold shooting bad guys like you're in Commando. Good stuff

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Again, huge sprites. The artwork is very primitive and grainy but I like the character models which go for a realistic look. Great use of color. Animations are minimal. I like what they were going for, despite the technical limitations they ran into.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Music is awful. It sounds like a failed attempt at a church organ piece. But the sound effects are nice, particularly the machine gun sound.

Overall Score: 66
