Hyperzone

Mode 7: The Video Game

Genre: shooter - corridor

Publisher: HAL

Year: 1991

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Simple corridor shooter. Plays a lot like After Burner or Space Harrier, but woth an even more constrained area in which you can navigate. You can shoot but no more than three bullets can be onscreen at a time and it's impossible to aim so you rarely hit anything. The only other button is a brake which is useful to avoid obstacles that don't shoot at you and to regain health in charging areas like those on F-Zero. Controls are very stiff and has momentum so it's not possible to turn on a dime. It's difficult to bank vertically and horizontally at the same time so you pretty much wind up moving up and down exclusively.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

No variety to the game. Just one long corridor with a few different enemies but they all amount to something in the distance that either shoots, moves in a pattern, or does both.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

The game looks so cool with the Mode 7 effect that I really want to like it. Unfortunately the novelty wears off real quick
