Kid Chameleon for Genesis

Kid Chameleon

The Fonz plays Mario

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Platformer. Go to the right. Reptiles you kill by bopping. Floating blocks and platforms. Jump up into the blocks to get gems. Collect 100 gems to earn an extra life. Some blocks give you a powerup/suit. Get hit a few times and you lose the suit and revert back to a small kid. Reach a flag at the end of each level to complete it. Noticing a theme here? Yeah, it's a Mario clone through and through. Extremely floaty controls. Even worse than the original SMB but that game was saved by the large sprites and blocks. This game has tiny sprites, blocks and platforms so you're in for some frustrating platforming. The powerups are the main attraction. They have some fun abilities, like a knight who can climb walls, a samurai with a sword attack, a rhino with a bash attack (ala Erik from Lost Vikings), and a straight-up Jason Voorhees with an axe projectile. It's not as refined as Mario or flexible as Mega Man but it's a good attempt.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Finally, some well designed levels that slowly introduce new concepts one after another. Not amazing, but certainly better than most platformers out there.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Pretty generic '90s setting. You're a young Fonzie (leather jacket and all) who has been trapped in a virtual reality world. Beyond that it looks, feels, and acts like a Mario clone but without the flash or charm of better clones like Bonk, Mega Man, Sonic, and such.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

NES+ graphics Tiny, basic sprites. Poor use of color. Uninteresting backgrounds. Overall a very blah looking title.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Very simple music and sound effects. You'll barely notice it's there.

Overall Score: 60
