Kirby Super Star

How much Kirby is too much Kirby?

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1996

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

5 full length games - Spring Breeze (10 min game), DynaBlade, Milky Way Wishes, Revenge of Meta Knight, and The Great Cave Offensive. A couple more mini games. Never been a huge fan of Kirby. The gameplay is rather slow and the games are incredibly easy. Controls are tight although attack animations are very long so if you miss you are vulnerable for a long time. Movement is very bouncy and unpredictable based on which ability you're using. Kirby is a bit of a spaz, hopping around or moving forward when you're just trying to attack forward. In most modes it's standard Kirby gameplay where you swallow enemies to gain their abilities and can poop out an AI companion who is mostly useless. It's a bit of a chore to get the build-out you want since you have to discard your current ability to get a new one but your companion often kills enemies before you can swallow them and when you discard your current ability it often replaces your companion.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

Tremendous variety. Lots of memorable places and levels which make use of your abilities.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Kirby is Kirby. Just pure bliss. Very fun and presented extremely well.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Late-gen SNES title so graphics are quite good with well-animated sprites, tons of effects, and very detailed backgrounds. However, the art style is a bit weird because the rounded, pre-rendered backgrounds look very different than the hand-drawn sprites. Even some of the bosses, like DynaBlade, look like they don't belong to the world that they inhabit. Not a big deal, but it creates a sense of incongruity.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Fantastic sound design. Music is catchy and enjoyable.
