Menacer 6-Game Cartridge

Sega's Scope 6

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Ridiculously tiny targets Perpetual levels. Just play until you lose interest...which will inevitably occur within 5 minutes

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Ready, Aim, Tomatoes - Set in Toejam & Earl's universe. Scroll right rather quickly and shoot a handful of different types of targets. Best strategy is just to hold down on turbo and spray shots everywhere. Pest Control - with the lights off shoot bugs trying to eat your pizza. You can only see immediately around your cursor. The sounds are horrible in this game. It sounds like a panting dog. Whack Ball - Well this is interesting. Instead of shooting you aim to move a paddle around the screen like a game of table hockey. I think your objective is to prevent the ball from escaping the enclosure within a set amount of time. Novel, but quickly gets boring since there are only a few maps and they just repeat endlessly. Space Station Defender - Shoot the aliens. This is the closest thing to a standard gallery shooter that is included in this collection. It's also, by far, the most boring minigame. It's no Lethal Enforcers. Rockman's Zone - Not to be confused with Mega Man. In any way, shape, or form. This plays like a scrolling Hogan's Alley, with tiny targets. Have I mentioned that the targets are tiny? Anyway, this reminds me of that scene from Magnum Force where Dirty Harry is a walking around that fake town in a policeman shooting contest. If you like shooting once every 15-30 seconds then this is the game for you. Frontline - Enemy tanks, choppers, planes, and armored vehicles scroll across the map on four different planes. You have a machine bgun and enemies take numerous hits. This should be the best mode but it's quite possible the worst. Oh and the targets are beyond tiny.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Sega did a good job of including some variety and even bringing in an established IP (T&E). The presentation of the game is atrocious with dumb menus, but the games have a "cool" factor that the Super Scope 6 games lacked.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Each game is a little different. Some are passable while others are downright unwatchable. The background in Whack Ball is vomit-inducing, for example. Overall the graphics are 8-bit quality. Oh and the sprites are stupid tiny with no animation whatsoever.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Music plays throughout and is little more than a beat. The sounds vary from game to game. The firing sounds great in Frontline, but is rage inducing in Pest Control.

Overall Score: 59

Review ID: 1065
