Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie

Further proof that a movie license makes everything worse

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Bandai

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

The controls are similar to the first game. Punch, jump, up+attack is an uppercut. Gone is the grab and throw moves. This time there's also a second plane of gameplay that can be toggled to by pressing R or L. Some enemies hug the ground so you have to duck and attack. The gimmick is that you must collect power from fallen enemies to transform into your Power Ranger suit rather than it happening automatically at a set point in each level. Difficult is much higher but that's not hard to achieve. The biggest weakness of the gameplay is the sheer stupidity of all enemies. Again they're all carbon copies of one another but they just shuffle from one side of the screen to the next. They're the dumbest baddies I've ever seen. And not just some of them. All of them do the same thing. I think you could do a pacifist run of this game.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The levels remain long, like in the first game, but this time around there are lots of env hazards like bottomless pits and flames shooting up. The two planes mechanic must be used occasionally but generally can be ignored unless you're farming for power.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Feels a bit dorkier than the first one. Not bad but it's taking itself way too seriously this time.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Good graphics, but the prerendered headshots are a bit much. Again, the artists took this more seriously than necessary. I ordered the cartoony look of the original.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Decent music and sound. Rocking soundtrack, but it seems to only have one song.

Overall Score: 60
