MUSHA for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

MUSHA

Needs more cowbell. And weapons

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Seismic

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Only three sub weapons - a shield, a laser, and almost completely useless missiles. Really wish there were more weapons. Collect powerups which also act as health. Take damage until health depletes. HUGE sprite means an enormous hitbox. Fairly easy aside from the huge hitbox. Your options can be put in one of 6 configurations, but only two are useful so you have to cycle through them using A which is way far away from the firing button. B should've been mapped to firing. Continuous firing. No horizontal scrolling

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Amazing level design. So many incredible set pieces like. The bosses are weak but the levels themselves are awesome. Only 5 or 6 short levels. The entire game is about 20min long

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Love the mech design and flying in formation at the start only to see your partners all taken out. You're truly alone in this fight. The ambiance is pretty great. It feels like a high stakes situation at all times. A little message appears at the start and end of each level letting you know what needs to be done. Love it

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Wonderful use of color. Every level looks distinct and interesting. Pseudo 3D backgrounds are simply incredible. Wonderful sense of depth, especially in the level where the floor falls away to a lava river below. Minimal slowdown. Impressive effects like the lightning in an area each time you destroy enemies who appear from behind clouds. Awesome sprite work

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Upbeat music. Sounds are good although your weapon is a bit too loud. Explosions are satisfying

Overall Score: 73
