Ninja Spirit for TurboGrafx-16

Ninja Spirit

Shoot em up with extreme gravity

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: NEC

Year: 1990

System: TurboGrafx-16

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Slow movement but once you're powered up with two ghost familiars (Ninja Gaiden 2 style) you're able to fill the screen so speed doesn't matter as much. Also enemies move rather slowly too. Toggle at will between four different weapons. Super high jump. Plays more like a shoot em up than a platformer. Maybe a shoot em up with extreme gravity.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Extreme verticality in many stages. Some fun elements which teach you to use each of the weapons strategically.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Exudes coolness. Unabashedly Ninja focused

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Nice, squat sprites. Screen filling weapons area sight to behold. Massive slowdown fire to the huge sprite counts, but it's almost welcome because of the frenetic action. Drab colors. I wish projectiles were easier to discern.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Meh music and sounds

Overall Score: 79

Review ID: 1483
