Onslaught

Capture the flag in a speedo

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Ballistic

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

I do not understand these Amiga/C64 games that came out of Europe. They're so weird! Your objective is to storm the castle, grab a flag, and go back left to escape. Simple enough but enemies are absolutely swarming. You can barely move. Enemies only give damage when they attack and otherwise can just walk right through you which they do often. Weapons drop all over the place and have limited ammo. They're four different kinds of weapons - mace, a skull that runs around the screen killing enemies, another school that explodes, and scrolls that sometimes clear all enemies. You can select which weapon you want to use but the ammo lasts so little time and enemies are so frequent that you can't really pick which one you want. You just got to jam on the button and continually pick up new stuff. It's hectic. You press up to jump, which I found myself doing way more than I wanted to. At the end of each level you fight the dumbest boss battle. I think I've ever seen. It's a four-legged spider guy that shoots unavoidable projectiles at you from close range and you're a hand at the bottom of the screen shooting green balls of goo at this spider face thing. I have no idea what's going on here. On the title screen press A, B, B, A, C, A, B. Trust me.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Every level seems about the same. There's three levels of platforms that seem to be randomly placed. You go to the right, get the flag and then go back to the left every time.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

It's some sort of swords and sorcery with you as a long-haired Fabio looking guy. Not really sure what's going on here but I don't know that I want to.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Third style is typical Western stuff with poorly drawn sprites and backgrounds. I mean they're not poorly drawn but they're not shaded at all so they just look fake. They look silly.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

The music is interesting, but there's zero sound effects which is completely off-putting. So much stuff is happening on the screen but it feels like you're watching a silent movie or something.

Overall Score: 38
