Publisher: NEC
Year: 1989
System: TurboGrafx-16
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
It's funny because this game shares some flaws that I gripe about in other games, like slow movement and insane difficulty, but it does everything with such style that I can't help but overlook the downsides. And besides, this game is hard but completely fair. This is the original git gud game. Incredible power-ups. Iconic and fun option mechanic.
Level Design Score: 5
Level Design Notes:
The best designed levels in a shooter. Every few seconds there's another memorable and unique encounter. This isn't an endless series of identical enemy waves like so many other shooters.
Theme Score: 5
Theme Notes:
Everything about this game exudes cool. The techno-organic levels give off a distinct, creepy Alien vibe.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Yeah it has aged but the visual design in this game is impeccable. Enemy sprites are so well designed and drawn. Each sprite has a character of its own, from the little hopping mouser to the huge laser mech and the xenomorph boss. And that's just the first level.
Audio Score: 5
Audio Notes:
Perfect sound design. Incredible soundtrack.
