Revenge of Shinobi

Ninja slow-mo

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1989

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Incredibly slow movement. One attack - shuriken - plus a sword slash or low kick if you're right next to an enemy. Insane difficulty mostly due to the crappy movement. You've also got a double jump which only works if you press jump again at the absolute apex of your jump. One frame off and you don't get it.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Who knows. I could barely get past the first two screen before encountering an impossible first boss. I finally lowered the difficulty and upped the shuriken count and found a safe spot from which I could do a somersault shuriken attack which shoots 8 projectiles include on which hits the bad guy in his weak spot on his head. How this could be done without way too much ammo is beyond me. Also platforming is atrocious. Getting across those moving platforms that impale you on bamboo spikes is way harder than it looks.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

You're a ninja fighting ninjas. So cool. And the title screen cinematic is amazing. Good stuff

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Pretty simple, even for a 1989 title. Barely any color and a ton of resused tiles and sprites. Barely any frames of animation.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Wow. The sound test is the the highlight of this game. Amazing stuff
