RoadBlasters

Genre: racing - vehicle combat

Publisher: Tengen

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Fast, simple, repetitive. I love it! Seriously, why can't all arcade racers move this quickly and smoothly? And why can't they have the simple controls in this game? There are turns galore but you never drive off the road. Instead of struggling to stay on the parent the object of this game is to gun down other cars and pick up fuel. Heck you don't even need to hold down the gas. I love the simplicity in display here. It's a shallow game to be sure but it's a pick up and play game. A real guilty pleasure.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Not much going on here. Three types of cars, road side cannons, mines, and gas pickups are the only variables in the game. The only other allergy is the clock which you don't have enough of on the latter levels.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Drive fast and shoot.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Wonderful performance. I wish OutRun looked and performed this well. Your car looks and animates beautifully. Enemies scale quickly and explode in glorious fashion.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Lovely arcade sounds. The music is not great tho
