Rocky Rodent for SNES
Review #471
Rocky Rodent
Sonican't stop
Gameplay
Sonic clone with major momentum issues. Takes a long time to recover from running so there's not much value in doing so.
Hairspray give you a mohawk that can be used like a horn to attack enemies or to attach yourself to a platform and fling yourself up to it.
When running full speed you get 100% draw distance.
Level Design
Climbing vertically using your mohawk is extremely slow and only lets you collect optional food stuff which isn't even the currency, it's just for points. Instead you can just get to the end of the level.
Each level has a gimmick involving your hair. Level 1 give you a horn. Level 2 is a runner. Level 3 is a boomerang.
Clear visual clues let you know what you can do. Good design.
Theme
Really weird anthropomorphic rodent living in a world filled exclusively with humans. Why is the character a rodent? Why aren't the other characters animals?
Plot is that the mafia has kidnapped a restauranteur's daughter and he hires you to rescue her with the promise of unlimited food to eat. Uhh, what's with the adult theme but low stakes?
Otherwise just another mascot platformer, and an ugly mascot at that.
Art Style
Small handdrawn sprites. Most are unattractive, particularly the tongue-wagging hero.
Nice, simple, but shaded and well-drawn environmental tiles.
Backgrounds have impressive use of parallax scrolling.
Audio
Music was ok until I got to level 3 - the ghost apartment. It's HORRIBLE. Like a toddler banging on a broken keyboard.
