Sonic Blast Man 2

Another hidden gem from Taito

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Taito

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

A couple of novel things about the gameplay: - Two attacks - one weak and fast and the other powerful and slow. - A dedicated roll button which let's you get behind enemies. These two mechanics add a ton of strategy. Finally a brawler that isn't just mashing. 2P now included. 3 characters to choose from. Fast, responsive gameplay.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Not just city streets. Stage 2 is on top and then inside Air Force One. Stage 3 is a dock at night.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Goofiness is slightly higher than the first but still falls far short of Captain Commando. It's still closer to Final Fight, but with androids (aka aliens) instead of gang member goons. The Mega Man X boss in stage 2 is hilariously out of place. It gets a little weirder in stage 4 with mutants in a jungle but it doubles down on trying to make the weird world more believable rather than more silly.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Looks and animates beautifully. Well, the CT harasser models are decent but forgettable. They look like they're tired straight out of Power Rangers.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music is, in a word, bad. The jazzy nonsense in stage 3 is particularly awful. Stage 4's music is decent but feels out of place in this game. The sounds are also not great. They either too quiet, like landing a punch, or weird, like the death keel of an enemy which sounds like the bat of a donkey.

Overall Score: 75
