Space Ace for SNES

Space Ace

Dragon's Lair. IN SPACE!!!

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Absolute

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Perhaps the worst platforming in a video game ever. The levels and platforms are all isometric (3/4 angle) but your movement is up-down-left-right which means a square tile is actually a rhombus, so the edges of the platform are angled awkwardly. Combines the sound effects of Earthworm Jim, the perspective of Sonic 3D Blast, weird between-level shooter game with no rhyme or reason - do I need to shoot all the green orbs to open a specific portal but they all look the same?

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Each level is essentially just one long autoscroller, with enemies and obstacles popping out in set patterns and locations that absolutely require memorization. Basically just a speedrun where you memorize where to stand on each screen

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Standard damsel in distress storyline.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Maybe it's true to the original, but the hero looks gangly and unheroic. Pretty simple graphics with one-color textures and little or no shading or other effects. Looks flat. Death animations are so low res you wonder why the developer included them

Audio Score: 2
