Steel Empire
Genre: shooter - horizontal
Publisher: Acclaim Entertainment
Year: 1992
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
The gimmick is two different vehicles (a plane or a zeppelin) plus dedicated buttons for shooting forward or backward. That feature alone makes this a must play. Otherwise it's pretty standard stuff with the added benefit of a large health bar and thus a lower difficulty than many shooters.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Steampunk theme set roughly in the 1920's era of aerial technology. Pretty unique amongst all the space and fighter jet shooters.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Backgrounds are mostly empty, single color mattes. Colors are muted greys and orange/brown. They went with an old timey theme and made the graphics to match. It's consistent throughout the game and the various locales, but it's not what I would call beautiful.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
Music fits the theme well. Sounds a bit strange but not terrible.
