Street Smart for Genesis

Street Smart

SNK in the pre Neo Geo days

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: Treco

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Pre Street Fighter 2, but getting close. You can move vertically like in Double Dragon or Renegade. Attacks include a punch, kick, jump kick, and an E. Honda fast punch which drains health. Hit detection is awful. The jump kick never connects and the punch is weak and has short range so the only way to win is to roundhouse kick like you're Chuck Norris. It gets monotonous but fights are generally short. Only one playable character. Nice fast movement

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There are 9 fights. Only 4 fighters with three fights being refights with two of one of the guys you fought previously. There's a gambling mechanic where you can get for you or your opponent but it's doesn't earn you more money either way. Also the money is useless. It's just points. Probably an arcade feature they forgot to implement or remove. The boys was the easiest fight in the game.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

The title screen and menus are completely stark. Just a black screen with text. Between fights there's a screen showing you with a girl on your arm and the end credits showa montage of all the opponents. Pretty lackluster.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

SNK were close with this one. The sprites are beefy and well drawn. Your character is comically tiny compared to your opponents and even the crowd. Limited animation. Most stages only use about three different colors. So if the opponent is wearing green then half of the crowd in the background is also wearing green.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The music is quiet but not too bad. It's upbeat and arcadey. The sounds are minimal however, and don't always match what's happening on screen.

Overall Score: 42
