Super Tennis

The top seed

Genre: sports - tennis

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1991

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 5

Gameplay Notes:

I think the key to this game working so well is how smoothly the ball moves. It's easy to tell where the ball is and where your player is in relation to it. The physics are excellent. Hit detection is also generous so a successful volley has more to do with skill than luck. Four distinct hits that can be used strategically to push your opponent where you want them to go. Crashing the net also works better than any other tennis game. The timing on serves makes sense and works well. AI is very good and fair. The opponent misses things and generally plays like another human player.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

All the usual modes. I like how different the characters are. You can adjust the difficulty by playing as a woman against a man or vice versa. This is a major part of the game's appeal.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Purely arcade style sports game. The menus are attractive, simple, and load quickly.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Sprites are cartoony and almost chibi style. No uncanny valley here. Animation is excellent and most importantly everything performs perfectly. I think the graphics are perfect for this type of game.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Friendly music throughout. Voice samples play for deuce but not for every single score. Pleasant sounds that don't get on your nerves
