We're Back! A Dinosaur Story for SNES
Review #678
We're Back! A Dinosaur Story
Should've stayed gone
Gameplay
Three buttons, run, jump, and throw a ball. Yeah, you're a t-rex and your only attack is to throw a rubber ball. Actually you can bop but your sprite is so large and close to the bottom of the screen that you can barely see the tiny enemy you're gunning for.
Jump is quite high and camera scrolls with you making it hard to see what's below. Also nauseating
Enemies take multiple hits because why not.
Turning around plays an insanely long animation.
David Perry camera snaps back and forth giving you 80% draw distance. It's nauseating.
Jump animation is also overly long.
Controls are just horrible to work with.
Impossible to tell what is a platform. And some platforms have a bottom but no top so you can't jump up through them but can pass they from the top or sides.
Landing a jump kills all momentum
Level Design
First level design is baffling. Go right but get stopped by an impenetrable wall. Go back and there are two blocks with black lamps in them. Touching them gives you damage. Turns out there's a spring near the start of the level which sends you to higher platforms where two bulbs are. Collect them and go to the hurty black blocks to install the bulbs. Bizarre but pointless because that wall is still blocking my path! There's no way to proceed!!
Theme
No idea what this is based on. You're a cartoony dino who can't do anything.
Art Style
Decent artwork. Well drawn main sprite. The only other sprite I saw on the few screens I got to was a short fat bald guy in a beater.
Backgrounds are simple but colorful
Audio
Music is ok but the three sound effects I heard are bad. Jumping plays a spring sound that doesn't match the sound of an enormous dinosaur.
