Wolverine: Adamantium Rage for SNES

Image: MobyGames

Wolverine: Adamantium Rage

Me: outrage

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: LJN

Year: 1994

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Wow this is horrible gameplay. Completely unresponsive controls and some of the worst hit detection in a SNES game - heck in any game I've played. Does the Castlevania thing where you can't change your trajectory after jumping. Didn't we move past that in 1987? Also can't attack while jumping, if you can believe that. Makes it nigh impossible to attack flying enemies and those that are above you. And there are a bunch in the first level that are just out of reach. Multiple attacks including a kick, punch, claw slash, and a claw frenzy (using the R button, of all things). Why in the world would you ever use kick or punch? Enemies have no collision so they just phase right through you. Platforming is an absolute chore. Unfortunately, the game mostly consists of said activity.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Very video gamey, with steam blowing from the ceiling, lasers blocking your way and platforms galore. On the first level I ran into a dead end with no idea how to proceed. Do I clear all the enemies in the room? Is there a switch somewhere? Where am I to begin with? What is the point of this game?

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Wolverine is an awesome character. I'm giving this game way more time and effort because I want it to be playable, but alas, it is not. Enemies are blah robots that could be in any random game. Other than the sprite, nothing about this game says Wolverine, X-Men, or Marvel.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Not great but not terrible. Looks flat and dead like so many of the licensed platformers on the SNES. Still, the background have some detail and scrolling while the sprites animate alright. Not a complete failure.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Repetitive music that's little more than a beat plus a siren. Horrible noise. Sounds are all wrong and don't even play when they're supposed to. Slashing with Logan's claws sounds like clanking two bitter knives together. So lame. And obnoxious. Horrible sound design.

Overall Score: 25
