Gameplay

Five intro levels - one per hero. Each plays differently, but has a normal attack and one or two SF2-style moves. Most are fun to use but Beast can take a hike. His special move is a dive forward that makes him vulnerable to attack. He's awful, although he can butt stomp like Scrooge in Duck Tales.
Fairly slow movement. This is the biggest drawback in the gameplay.
High difficulty. Includes a Practice mode that lets you play the first set of missions and execute special moves with a single button press. I wish this were the default.
I wish I could use Wolverine or Cyclops for all levels.

Level Design

Five intro levels & another round of levels with new enemies like the Brood. Lots of variety in the levels. Some are very platforming heavy (Gambit & Wolverine) while others are more focused on combat (Cyclops & Psylocke).
The level designs are generally good but a couple of them are just awful when combined with the movement of that level's character (I'm looking at you Beast).

Theme

Very well presented comic book superhero gaming. Good stuff

Art Style

The best era of X-Men history - at least from an art style and character design perspective. Jim Lee's X-Men are the best X-Men.
Excellent animation of huge sprites. Effects like explosions look great as well.

Audio

Great music and outstanding sounds. This is what Wolverine's claws should sound like.
