X-Zone

Terminator meets Battle Clash

Genre: shooter - gallery

Publisher: Kemko

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Pretty standard lightgun stuff at this point. The camera slowly pans to the right and you shoot everything, particularly the projectiles fired at you. Brutal difficulty, even on Easy mode. There's simply too much to shoot at and the enemies take a ton of hits to defeat. You've got a rapid fire gun and a missile but I could not figure out how to connect with the latter. It locks on after you hold down but I don't know how to fire the weapon consistently. Just repetitive gameplay with nothing interesting to do. Powerups appear sometimes but I don't know what they do.

Level Design Score: 1

Level Design Notes:

Levels include a downward descent into a desert base, followed by a series of standard scroll-to-the-right levels. I was hopeful that the first one would be rule, but alas it is the exception. Boring level design.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

The storyline is Terminator (Skynet has just been turned on). The setting is uninspired. 90s X-tensive X-Men-level use of X-based puns that are X-tremely obnoxious and X-traordinarily X-traneous to the otherwise bland story.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Decent artwork, but the colors are washed out. Performs well, even when the screen is full of stuff.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Rocking tunes.
