Deae Tonosama Appare Ichiban

Pocky, Rocky, and Cho Aniki

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Sunsoft

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

This is a top-down action title similar to Pocky & Rocky. The controls aren't a complete trainwreck, but you've only got one move, despite every face button having a function. A attacks, B jumps, Y dashes, and X taunts or turns you into a musclebound beefcake for a couple of seconds if you've collected some powerups. Your attack is awful. So bad that it's best to simply run through the stage and avoid combat if possible. Hit detection is almost non-existent. There are two playable characters - a Kabuki kid with a fan that acts as a melee attack or a French looking actor guy who throws a little dagger. Both are terrible. Oh and the slowdown is some of the worst in any SNES title. Don't bother.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Waves of enemies attack. Either kill them off screen or run past them. They respawn when you leave the screen so just keep moving. Enemies are repeated time and time again. The levels are mercifully short and you can select a stage from the start but that's about the only outside I can give it.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

So weird! Every boss enemy is a beefy dude who flexes and poses for you. Big-time homoerotic vibes like those in Cho Aniki franchise. This one's not as bizarre but eveey but as unsettling. I was glad to turn it off.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

The graphics aren't terrible, but use mostly muted, boring colors and designs. The enemies aren't even interesting. Everything just feels low budget, except for the bosses and some of the special effects like the explosions when an enemy dies. And the slowdown is atrocious when 3 or more enemies are on screen.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Terrible music and annoying voices and other sounds. Again, I was glad to have turned this off.

Overall Score: 26
