Donald Duck no Mahou no Boushi

Donald dons a Hat

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Epoch Co.

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Slow movement, although you can run by holding down X, SMB style. Clearly made for a very young audience. No offensive capabilities aside from jumping on enemies. Terrible hit detection, although not much hits you so it's usually not a problem. In fact, I'd say this is a decent gateway drug for kids who are ready to try a platformer.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Most levels are almost completely devoid of enemies. Most of the design is around platforming and some maze-like navigation. Extreme variety between levels. They almost feel like distinct games. You begin having to pick from three "jobs" to earn money. One has you jumping from ledge to ledge cleaning windows in what feels like a Fix-it Felix game. Another job has you sneaking into a house trying not to touch things that make noise and will wake up a guard dog. After completing these job levels an overworld opens up allowing you to choose from 5 other levels which play like different kinds of platformers. These include a vertical climb stage with lots of platforming, a labyrinthine cave which is more linear that it initially appears, and a difficult rotating stage that plays a bit like Stage 4 The Ghoul's Stomach from Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. As you move between differently oriented platforms the screen rotates to make the platform be on the bottom of the screen. This is novel but ultimately frustrating because it's so easy to get lost.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The story is laughable. Literally. I was laughing at how silly the story is and the sound effects from Donald after each level. It's so bad it's good.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Amazing sprites and animation. I didn't matter who made Disney games during this era - they all look great. Unfortunately, the backgrounds aren't as impressive and feature no parallax or other niceities.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Uninspired, but inoffensive music. Almost no sound effects.

Overall Score: 63
