Doraemon 3: Nobita to Toki no Hougyoku

Robot cat Metroidvania

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Epoch Co.

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Basic platforming that's missing mechanics like dropping through a platform, running, or even a variable jump. Combat is with a projectile weapon. Looks like other weapons will be picked up. Most enemies also throw projectiles so this game is almost a run n gun game. RPG elements like leveling and money gathering to spend at shops. There's some good stuff here but it's outweighed by unnecessary RPG elements that make the game less playable to an English-speaking audience.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Confusing game structure. You begin in a village full of stores and inss which don't do anything. You go to the right, finish a short level and beat a boss. This opens one of three gates preventing further eastward movement, so you have to go back to the village to your left. Out the west side of the village is another deadend which might be passable later, Metroidvania-style. Finally, you must go to a warp which sends you to the present for one of those overhead areas the series is known for. It's a bit confusing, and due to the Japanese dialogue isn't impossible to know how to proceed.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Time traveling robot cats are cool, but this game requires a little too Japanese. Find a walkthrough if you intend to play it.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Lovely sprites with nice shading. Everything looks clean and consistent, which is more than I could say about it's predecessors.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Very pleasant, fun music. The first level is in the distant, dinosaur past and the music sounds like it was lifted from Joe & Mac. The present day music is also nice, with a blissful feel.

Overall Score: 48
