Final Set Tennis
The ugly oneGenre: sports - tennis
Publisher: Human Entertainment
Year: 1994
System: SFC
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
Playable, but there are glitches and random slowdown which makes it unpredictable to hit the ball sometimes. Also there's a stamina meter which inexplicably drains as you play. Naturally, your stamina drops more quickly than your opponent so about 2/3 of the way through a set it gets to the point where you can barely move around the court. This artificially amps up the difficulty. Inexcusable. Ruins an otherwise passable game.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
You can choose from singles doubles, a world tournament and a training mode with all the one player, two player, and even up to four player settings. Choose from eight different players - four women and four men. Also pick between hard lawn and clay.
Theme Score: 1
Theme Notes:
There's a Pac-Man wannabe on the menus in between matches. I don't know what's going on there. You can choose between men and women, although there isn't a difference in speed or gameplay between the two. There's also an overall goofy, dorky feel to things. I don't know how to explain it.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
Truly awful pixel work here. Everything looks pre-rendered from photographs. Maybe. Like there's no definition in the sprites the backgrounds, the menus, nothing. It's a pixelated mess. Graphical glitches are pervasive, as is slowdown. Just terrible.
Audio Score: 0
Audio Notes:
Some of the most awful, dorky music I've heard. And the sounds during gameplay are no better.
