Ganbare Goemon 3: Shishi Juurokubee no Karakuri Manjigatame
Goemon MetroidvaniaGenre: action - hack n slash
Publisher: Konami
Year: 1994
System: SFC
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Big departure from the first two games. There's far less combat and instaed the levels have simple puzzles involving a set of skills you acquire as you progress, Metroid-style. Slow movement. Far slower than the first two games. Controls are responsive, but a bit cumbersome. Climbing and descending ladders is a chore, for example.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
Quite a bit of precision platforming. And not in a fun way. Miss a jump and you'll have to climb back up a long ladder to give it another try. Assets and platforming sections are frequently repeated, giving the game a repetitive feel. This is so unlike the other games in the series!
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Goemon is silly. The story involves time travel and the girl-chasing antics of Ebisumaru and the old man. It's stilly, but not as wacky as the first two games.
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Still good, but a massive step down from the second game. the sprites are smaller and the backgrounds are sparse and far less interesting. The character designs are also less detailed.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
The music is good, but pales in comparison to the first two games. The sound effects likewise are missing something. They just feel watered down.
Overall Score: 73
