Hero Senki: Project Olympus

SD Fantasy

Genre: rpg - japanese

Publisher: Banpresto

Year: 1992

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Pretty standard JRPG gameplay, but with a number of QOL improvements. There's a nifty "Confer" menu item which reminds you of your current objective. Lovely. You start out with a four person party and each one has the normal Attack but also a handful of Magic-like abilities. I love being so capable right out of the gate. However, enemies hit hard so you'll be grinding early and often. Overall, this is a good 16-bit JRPG from a gameplay perspective.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Extremely linear design. You can't possibly get lost or explore.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

It's the SD crowd - Gundam, Ultraman, Kamen, etc. The story and setting are goofy. You control a counter terrorist group of superheroes who are called on to, well, counter terrorists who are attacking your allied nations. Not super compelling, but not terrible either. My main ocmplaint is that all areas feel the same. They have a modern, corporate look and feel. You spend most of your time walking around cities and inside business offices. I feel like I'm at work.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Excellent sprite work. The graphics look like a PC Engine game. You'll know what I mean when you see it. All the characters have enormous heads and all of the tiles and sprites feature heavy shading and rounded features. It's cute but a little too cartoony.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Decnent music. Not much variety though.

Overall Score: 72
