Kat's Run: Zen-Nippon K Car Senshuken for SFC

Kat's Run: Zen-Nippon K Car Senshuken
Kat's Outrun Kart
Gameplay
At first I was excited - the controls in this little arcade racer are easy to work with and the look, feel, and mechanics like offensive items, jumps, and pitfalls evoke memories of Mario Kart. But that all disappears once you get into first place. After that the challenge is gone forever, as it's nearly impossible to lose your place. There are no laps - you just keep going until you read the end of the current stage and a red dot sends you immediately into the next area. While the driving mechanics are more than adequate, this never-ending nature of the gameplay quickly makes it feel like a tedious slog.
Level Design
The aesthetics of each stage change drastically, from a beach to a desert to frozen tundra and on to a fantastical hell scape. It's both varied and surreal. The tracks themselves features turns and twists galore, plus jumps, endless pits, and narrow bridges. It's a nice variety, but again gets tiresome without any breaks between stages. And the only modes are this endless race and a VS mode.
A prime example of wasted potential.
Theme
The player can choose ten different characters and ten vehicles. Each is a cute anime character. While driving, your avatar appears in a window and reacts to taking turns and to overtaking enemies. It's very cute.
Art Style
Looks good for a mode 7 racer. The varied biomes give the game far more.variety than most racers. I debated whether to give it a 3 since the graphics aren't actually all that impressive, but again they're interesting.
Audio
Bad music and annoying sound effects. The voice samples are particularly bad
