Kikou Keisatsu Metal Jack

Thank you for your cooperation

Genre: action - punch n kick

Publisher: Atlus

Year: 1992

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Not too shabby, but there are a lot of better games. The controls are stiff - you have to be very deliberate in your jumps and attacks because if you time it wrong you'll fall into a pit or get hit by a charging enemy. Enemies have no collision and love to stand inside your sprite to stun lock you. Most doe with a single hit (on easy anyway) so if you time everything right you're good. But they run at you at a breakneck speed so it's all about inching forward and having the reflexes to react when an enemy suddenly appears. You have a punch, jump kick, and a gun with very limited ammo. The jump is almost completely useless because it's reach goes barely beyond your hitbox. For most enemies it's all about timing the jump kick properly, although bosses are hard to jump around against. Oh and the camera snaps to your position when jumping between platforms, giving the game a stilted feel.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There are enemy spawn points that are just off screen, such that if you stop just when an enemy spawns, they will instantly respawn when you kill the first one. So, you have to move slightly forward to prevent this infinite respawning which can be tough to do for certain kinds of enemies, like the ED-209s that show up in level 4.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Blatant ripoff of Robocop. You're one of three selectable police officer cyborgs who need to clean up Tokyo.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

NES+ quality. Looks very much like an early SNES title, although it's much better than something like Xardion. Tons of graphical glitches and almost no frames of animation. I do like the

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music isn't good but also isn't terrible. The sound effects, on the other hand, are downright awful. They're almost non existent and amount to weak tinny pangs.
