Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu

Kirby's take on Puyo

Genre: puzzle - blocks

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1999

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

How did this not come to the US?! I just played it for 2 hours straight. It's your typical Puyo clone but it gets everything perfectly right. The blocks drop as usual but you have ample time to see what's coming next, look for the right place to put it, and even to flip the piece while it's dropping or even after it has dropped. Don't get me wrong the tiles drop very quickly but the game is forgiving when placing them. It feels amazing. Then again, I'd say it's just a hair below classics like Tetris, Tetris Attack, Mario, and Bust a Move. Sticking combos is surprisingly easy and immensely satisfying. It's not a super easy game, especially in the story mode, but it feels fair and rewards even a little bit of planning and forethought.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

I thought Tetris Attack had the best set of modes in a puzzle game but this gives it a run for its money. The story mode is short and frantic but the real money is in Round Clear where you have to collect a certain number of stars to take off King Dedede's HP. Finally there's Challenge which is just an endless mode. Oh and 2P and Time Attack. Each mode feels unique and worthwhile.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Kirby. Impeccable presentation.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Pastel everywhere. The sprites and art follow the style from Kirby Dream Land 3. Not my favorite but undeniably quality stuff.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Excellent music and sound throughout.
