Kunio no Oden for SFC
Review #2203
Kunio no Oden
River City Blocks
Gameplay
Blocks falls in pairs and can be rotated but man do they fall too fast. This makes the difficulty way too high with no way to adjust it. You can choose between Puyo -style four tile matching, or instead use Columns-style three tile matching. Either way The game falls into the trap that so many of these puzzlers do - there are too many block colors! Making sets is difficult and once you make a mistake there's no hope of recovering. It controls ok but is too difficult to be any fun.
Level Design
Has the standard VS mode and an endless mode where the speed is dialed up to maximum. It's nigh unplayable.
However, before each match you can select between Columns or Puyo matching rules so you effectively get both games here.
Theme
The between match cutscenes show Kunio (River City) characters but in-game is food themed and feels like a completely disconnected game.
Art Style
Nothing special
Audio
You can select between the very Japanese music tracks.
