Kuusou Kagaku Sekai Gulliver Boy for SFC
Review #2205
Kuusou Kagaku Sekai Gulliver Boy
Secret of Mana-lite
Gameplay
Plays like Secret of Mana, where you have to wait for the meter to recharge before attacking again. Three playable characters, although the spiky haired kid is your main fighter.
Extremely simple gameplay - no magic, no weapons, no grinding necessary, no secrets, no nothing. It's as barebones as could be. All that said, I appreciate a game that respects your time. This one lets you play through in only a few hours. It's incredibly simple, but charming as a result.
Level Design
Small, simple environs. Each of the 9 areas has a small town with only three to five buildings you can enter. The whole game's map is probably as large as one area in Secret of Mana, Soul Blazer, or Terranigma. But again, the simplicity is more of a feature than a bug. This is a good game for beginners in this genre, although vets will find it laughably small.
Theme
Wow this is the most generic story ever! Your dad was killed by an evil dude who wants to kidnap the cute girl next door who mysteriously appeared in your village a few years back. You're on a quest for revenge and need to collect 4 Macguffins that only the girl can find. So off you go.
One cool aspect is the use of real world locales across Europe, including Venice, Spain, Rome, etc. There's also some tacked-on inclusion of high-technology from Atlantis (yes, that Atlantis). the dialogue is both cheeky and cringey and also completely on-the-nose. I found it fun anyway.
Art Style
Very simple graphics. This looks like a very early gen game despite releasing at the tail end of the 16-bit era.
Audio
Very soft, soothing music. There isn't an exciting song here. It's not bad, but it's entirely forgettable.
