Laplace no Ma for SFC
Review #2206
Laplace no Ma
Haunted Mansion meets D&D
Gameplay
Like any D&D game, you choose your class, roll the dice on your stats and go to the pub to gather three more party members. Members. Combat is about what you'd expect, although in the different classes have very different types of attacks. The scientists use machines with two devices being combined to create a certain type of attack. Not sure if that made sense. Every attack uses a battery so you have to stay stocked up on batteries. The journalist takes pictures and I have no idea what value that provides while the detective can use handguns melee weapons.
Level Design
Everything takes place in a single haunted Mansion. Unfortunately, every room looks the sameband there's no way to tell which floor you're on. There's no map so I felt lost the entire time I played. Boredom said in way too quickly.
Theme
Look, I commend the developers for trying to create a spooky, scary atmosphere. It doesn't really work because the environment feels so empty and boring. The enemies also seem too tangible, if that makes sense. Of what's going on when literal zombies and evil rats and other corporeal enemies are around every corner. Matt said, I do like the 1920s Boston setting. It makes me think of Lovecraftian fiction.
Art Style
The artwork is unimpressive at best. The environments are particularly sparse and boring. The enemy designs are okay. They feature a little bit of animation.
Audio
Foreboding music - sorry, a foreboding song - plays while in the haunted manor. It's tolerable but so repetitive that it got on my nerves after long. At least it matches the theme. It's spoooooky!
