Mario & Wario

Point and click, and click and click and click

Genre: puzzle - platform

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

This is a mouse game where you click to create or destroy platforms, collect coins, or interact with other environmental elements. The objective is to clear and prepare a path for Peach, Mario, or Luigi to wander toward the goal. So yeah, it's an escort mission using a mouse. And not just any mouse - the Super NES Mouse. I played it with the authentic hardware and could not believe how hard it is. Even with the slowest settings I was constantly yelling at the mouse to register my clocks and move where I told it to. I hate to blame the controller but this is what the game was built for. Even if the controller was working perfectly I don't think this is a game I'd spend significant time with.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Despite the terrible gameplay, the levels are creative and varied. And there are dozens of them. I wish there was a level select. You must select a world and then play through all 10 or more levels within that world beginning with the first one. This severely limits the replayability.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Mario and friends sprites, but almost nothing else about the game and its environments feel like it's in their universe.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The art looks more like Mario Is Missing than Super Mario World. It looks like a fan project.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

One song plays continuously. It's not great. Why couldn't they use Mario music?

Overall Score: 53
