Mickey no Tokyo Disneyland Daibōken for SFC

Mickey no Tokyo Disneyland Daibōken

Play the Magical Quest trilogy instead

Genre: action - platform

Publisher: Tomy

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Extremely slow movement. Feels a lot like Mickey Mania. This game's gimmick are two types of balloons. You can crate, a water balloon which can be thrown or placed on the ground and bounced on, and an air balloon that allows you to rise up in the air and shoot horizontally across the screen. The water balloon is your only offensive weapon, although there are few enemies. You also use the water balloon to solve puzzles and whatnot. It takes a couple of seconds to blow up a balloon, so you generally have to hold down on the button to get a water balloon ready. It's like Mega Man X in that regard. You're always holding down powering up that shot. It's very simplistic. The controls are also very laggy with long animations.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The platforming is awkward given the extremely slow movement. There are pits with spikes or fire which hurt you and don't give you enough time to blow up a air balloon to escape the pit. So you're stuck down there. Waiting to get hurt enough times to die. Levels are pretty straightforward and not what I would call dynamic. They're okay and at least have variety between them. It's a short game with only 18 short levels.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

It's Mickey Mouse. But you could swap out the Mickey sprite for anything else and the game wouldn't be affected. There's nothing else that screams Disney here.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The sprite work is good but nothing in comparison to the Capcom games or even the other Mickey games of the era. It looks like early 16-bit title.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Awful music. Far from the orchestral wonders in Magical Quest and Mickey Mania. The tracks are short and loop infinitely.

Overall Score: 48
