Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Kodō for SFC

Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Kodō

Looks like Ys, plays like Lagoon on fast-forward

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: Telenet Japan

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Short reach on your attack, and very fast movement...too fast. This combination leads to awkward combat where moving toward your enemy is almost certain to cause you to take damage. Instead, the best strategy is to find a safe spot and wait for enemies to come to you where you can hopefully time your strikes so they get hit but you don't. Enemies respawn when you leave and return to a screen which is helpful for farming but also discourages exploration since you have to weigh the cost of having to return from a possible dead end. There's an RPG-like leveling system but no screen which shows your status and progress toward the next level. You have a sword and can jump and perform a jumping slash. You also get a hookshot which is useful for grabbing items, bumping enemies, and traversal. If you've played Zelda 3 you know how this works. Overall the movement is good but not great, but the combat is subpar.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Extremely linear pathing. You can't possibly get lost at any point. Just keep going to the next obvious landmark. The levels themselves are simple as well. Just kill a couple of enemies, one at a time, and move on. It's not bad - just mid.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

The story takes center stage. You're a deposed prince trying to come home to a beseiged kingdom. It's got more character than many games in this genre.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Looks like an early gen title. Maybe a step above Lagoon, but with a decidedly Genesis color pallette. There's a ton of slowdown, especially when the reticulated enemies that Wolf Team loves so much appear on screen.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Meh. Not bad, but not great either.

Overall Score: 61
