Nice de Shot for SFC

Nice de Shot

Wait. Please.

Genre: sports - golf

Publisher: ASK

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Quick, fast golf gameplay. Reminds me of NES Tournament Golf on NES or Neo Turf Masters on NeoGeo. All the mechanics are here, like fade and where to strike the ball and whatnot, but it's not overly complex. Putting is extremely simple. You don't have to think about slope at all - only distance. My only complaint is the tiny map which makes it hard to see where your shot is likely to hit. You can see and set direction but have to make a guess at where your shot might land. Actually another complaint is the long loading times each time you change your aim. It takes about 3-5 seconds and the message "Wait. Please." appears on screen. You'll learn to hate this message. The gameplay would've earned a 4 if not for this.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Unfortunately the holes are mostly awful. Some are downright impossible. I never shot better than a bogey and routinely went OB or into sand traps and water hazards. The tiny map doesn't help but the designs of the holes themselves are just bad.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

There's a playful, arcadey, cartoony feel to the game which is reflected in both the art and sound design. Has almost a Hot Shots Golf feel. This is one of the more approachable 16-bit golf games.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

I love the sprites and the visualization before and after a shot, but the holes look pretty bad, owing to the choice of very low-poly visuals for the ground. I suspect this is what's causing the slow load times which only makes the choice all the more baffling. It's ugly and distracting, especially when merged with the sprite based characters and environmental elements like trees.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Some nice music and good enough sounds abound. The music is upbeat and fun, adding to the arcade feel of the game.
