Nichibutsu Arcade Classics

Classics is a bit of a stretch

Genre: arcade - n/a

Publisher: Nichibutsu

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

A collection of three early 80s arcade games. 1. Moon Cresta - Galaga, with a mechanic where you can upgrade you ship twice to add firepower. Easily the best game of the three. 2. Crazy Climber - Some for the most intuitive controls I've ever used. Clearly was a dual stick cabinet which translates ok given the four face buttons. Still, the awkwardness of the movement in this game cannot be overstated. 3. Frisky Tom - Terrible Donkey Kong Jr. Easily the worst game of the three.

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Moon Cresta is made of three distinct stages which each last about 1 or 3 minutes. Once you beat it the game loops. So yeah, it's got 3 to 10 minutes of gameplay, after which you'll never have a desire to play it again. The less is said about the other two gamesz the better. Crazy Climber is an endless climb while Frisky Tom is confusing and convoluted.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

I guess there's a certain charm in these ancient games, but these all feel like soulless clones of much better classic titles.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

This is being generous. In 1995 these games looked ancient.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

These games feature no music, so all we have to judge are the sound effects. These aren't the nostalgic Atari sounds you remember.

Overall Score: 15
