Rendering Ranger: R2 for SFC

Image: MobyGames

Rendering Ranger: R2

If Michael Bay made a SNES game

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Virgin

Year: 1995

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Almost perfect. Four weapons and a shield can be powered up by collecting drops. Once fully poweee your weapons will fill the screen..herein loes the problem - at some point you're so OP that you just mow down all enemies and the game becomes a slow and steady march to the right. The gameplay doesn't get much more.interesting than that, I'm afraid. Half the levels are shoot-em-ups and those have the same issue. The only novelties are the ability to hold R and L to title your gun diagonally in the run-and-guns levels and to press B to turn around in the shmup stages. Pretty cool. The game could've used a few more mechanics like this or something else to break up the monotony.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

As mentioned previously, this game has both run-and-gun and shmup stages. They're full of great set pieces and boss fights, but tend to drag on with want after wave of the same stuff.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Terminator meets Turrican meets Axelay

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Unreal! Looks like a Neo Geo game. Yes it uses a gritty, brown color palette but my goodness the pixel art is incredible! Explosions are everywhere, the backgrounds are gorgeously animated, and the vehicle designs are out of this world. The ship at the end of stage 2 just about about made me jump out of my chair.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

I'm tempted to bump this down because the music repeats so quickly but I think that's more of a problem with the too-long levels than the quality of the music itself. It won't make you forget Contra's tunes but the music is rockin.

Overall Score: 83
