Taekwon-Do

Best of the Best of the Best

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: Human Entertainment

Year: 1994

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Plays a lot like Best of the Best but with responsive controls. It's very different from any other fighting game, but has its own charm due to its uniqueness. Only a handful of fighters are available. They're all palette swaps and feature the same moves but have differing stats in attack, defense, speed, etc. The gameplay is supposed to be very technical, like actual taekwondo, but works ok as a button mashing affair. The main problem with the gameplay is that matches last so long. You have to knock your opponent down 5 times or let the long time run down. You and your opponent fatigue as the match goes on.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Typical tourney and vs modes, plus a terrible practice mode that's almost exclusively text based.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Leans heavily into realism. Accurate scoring system, which is a complete mystery to me.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Fantastic animation. Unfortunately the sprites are all pallete swaps on the same model so there's not much to see. But they sure look good in motion. The arenas all look the same as well, so there's no variety in the game.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Meh

Overall Score: 63
