Tetris Battle Gaiden

Random Tetris

Genre: puzzle - blocks

Publisher: Bulletproof

Year: 1993

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

So, this is a competitive Tetris game through and through. However, the gimmick is that you and your opponent gain special abilities by clearing certain blocks. This allows you to cause weird stuff to happen on your opponents screen, like adding incomplete rows from the bottom, wiping out blocks that are in the queue, and other random events. That's all fine and dandy, I suppose, but they happen with such remarkable frequency that you can barely play the game! I swear, half the time the block I'm about to place just disappears. It's so random!! It's Tetris, but I hated my experience playing this one. Maybe it's doable while playing with a second human player but against the computer it's awful.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There's only the one mode - "Battle". You can choose from either characters which each have a different set of special attacks. But that doesn't matter much. Other options are available, including difficulty (Easy is impossible), and speed. Still, it's just the one mode of play.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

There's a tacked on whimsical set of characters. They each feel like they're ripped from a different game which leads to a weird mashup of random stuff.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Not much to look at, although there are a bunch of different backgrounds.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Pleasant, bouncy music and some fun sound effects.

Overall Score: 44
