Black Hole Assault

Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: Bignet

Year: 1993

System: Sega CD

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Laggy controls and terrible special moves. I couldn't get any to work but they would do so sporadically if I button mashed. Ultimately, it was a bad experience. The long animations of moves means that everything feels slow. In fact, reminds me of Shaq Fu.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

The developers went out of their way to provide a lot of modes and tons of customization options. you can fine tune difficulty, play as any of the robots, create a tournament, etc. If only the gameplay were better. There are ten stages. They have minimal animation in the background, as it's mostly spacecapes (is that a word?) or interiors of space stations. So, not terribly exciting, but some are quite pretty. A few even have environmental hazards, like fire shooting from the ground every so often.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

The most boring mech fighting theme I've ever seen. Actually, Rise of the Robots is far worse, but it's more about robots than mechs. what's missing is anything resembling a human element, as all you ever see are these hungs of metal whacking away at each other.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Impressive stuff! The mech designs are meh, but they're well drawn and animate beautifully. The stage backgrounds could use more details, but I'll roudn up on this one.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The music does not fit the theme at all. It's soft and bouncy - the exact opposite you'd want while watching rock and sock 'm robots.

Overall Score: 45
