Chiki Chiki Boys
Play the Genesis version insteadGenre: action - hack n slash
Publisher: NEC
Year: 1994
System: PCE CD
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Your only attack is to swing a sword. It has a decent range and you can mash it to almost make yourself in vulnerable since your attack hits things above and even behind you. Enemies and even their projectiles can be destroyed. So generally you just walk around mashing the whole time. You've got a screen clearing magic attack that you can use once or maybe twice per level and between stages you visit a shop where you can upgrade your sword, your defense, and your magic. Your jump is quite short so you have to time it well. Also enemies swarm to you and spawn infinitely so most of the challenge is keeping enemies off of you. It's a very easy game once you figure out how to proceed.
Level Design Score: 3
Level Design Notes:
The levels are incredibly short. Like 2 minutes long. They're also quite simple. You can just go to the right. There's no verticality at all to any level that I saw. You can go whatever pace you want. You can linger to load up on coins or just push through to the end. Each level has a mini boss and then a final boss. The levels have some variety in that summer are completely grounded while others have you floating in the air or floating underwater.
Theme Score: 3
Theme Notes:
Looks and plays like a Wonderboy game. There's a language barrier in the shop which by itself makes the Genesis version superior.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Almost sickeningly cute and colorful graphics. Still, it's a major step down from the gorgeous Genesis versions. Sprites are smaller, feature less animation, and show a lot of flicker.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Another major step down from the Genesis version, despite that CD format. Music is orchestral but quiet, especially compared to the loud and obnoxious sound effects. Gone are the nice Capcom 80's arcade sounds. Instead the sounds are harsh, like the piercing swipe of your sword.
Overall Score: 58
