Championship Rally for PCE CD
Review #11015
Championship Rally
Gameplay
Controls feels great - like Micro Machines, but tight. The turning sensitivity is just right. Sliding around a corner feels perfect and never requires you to let off the gas. Once you get going the camera gives you a good 70% of draw distance which is just enough to see around corners. Crashing will happen but you've got good acceleration so it's not a big deal. You always go up and so never need to fight with the controls to figure out which direction is left or right.
Level Design
I know they were going for a lot of winding backroads for the Rally setting, and these work on the simple tracks, but there are a number of them with convoluted branching paths and obstacles all over the place. I was smacking into everything and finishing the track in twice the time that I needed. Overall this is the problem with the game - the expectation of perfection that it places upon you. The time limits that must be met require tremendous skill, memorization, and reflexes that I'm simply not capable of.
Theme
Jump right in. All English menus. I love PC Engine games and their no-nonsense presentation.
Art Style
Colorful, cartoony, and performant. Graphics are simple yet extremely effective.
Audio
Pleasant music and sounds, but I didn't take any special note of either.
