Chou Kyuukai Miracle Nine

The Immaculate Inning, every inning

Genre: sports - baseball

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1995

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Decent late-gen baseball game with the good, standard controls for pitching and fielding. Hitting and baserunning, on the other hand, are weird. When hitting the view is isometric, making it virtually impossible to see the lateral placement of the ball. There's a huge colored box over the plate that shows whether the ball will come in on the top or bottom of the strike zone. At least I think that's what it indicates. In any case, whether or not you will hit the ball is dependent upon where you are in the batters box and whether the ball is up or down in the zone. You can hold up to pop the ball or down to hit it on the ground, but these almost always result in an out. But some pitches can't be hit even with the perfect timing. I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do. The other weird thing is that the opposing pitcher always throws a strike. It's incredible. do nothing and they will throw an immaculate inning every time. Weird. Baserunning is also strange becuase sometimes B will send all runners and other times it will only send some. I think the way it works is that you can send only the lead runner but if you send anyone else it will almost move anyone ahead of him. Whatever it is, this leads to a lot of unintended outs.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

There are several modes but the Japanese text makes them hard to distinguish between. I think they're season, quick game, and scenario. There's also a config/settings screen but I don't know what anything is.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Japan League license. Very arcadey look and feel. I like the chibi characters and weird proportions. The Japanese text makes menus very hard to navigate, however, which drags down the experience quite a bit.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Characters look a lot like Konami's Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu series. They're huge, chunky blobby guys. It's as if Faceball 2000 was a baseball game.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

The music and sounds are greaty, but the audio quality is terrible.

Overall Score: 62
