Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams

The other witch-based shooter

Genre: shooter - horizontal

Publisher: TTI

Year: 1993

System: TG-16 CD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

I know this game is infamous for its rarity and pricetag, but I'm not a fan. Slow. Peashooter with damage sponge enemies. Mash both buttons to fire and drop a bomb. Huge hitbox. Enemies everywhere and one hit death. Takes FOREVER to power up. Yeah, no thanks.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Stages fill the screen with enemies pretty much constantly. Some stages feature vertical scrolling and most feature enemies at the bottom of the screen who pop up infreqently to fire a bullet or two before hiding. Super annoying. I didn't enjoy my time.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Non sensical story about a young witch with a hot fairy pet. It's weird. the game itself has a sort of Halloween theme with cute but spoooooky enemies.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Low effort pixel artwork throughout plus some flicker and a ton of slowdown. And the backgrounds couldn't be less interesting. It's not a complete trainwreck, but this is a low 2.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The music does not match the theme. At all. It's lively and jazzy while the game's theme is spooky and it's pace is as slow as a snail.

Overall Score: 41
