Cutie Suzuki no Ringside Angel

Aw, such cuties

Genre: fighting - wrestling

Publisher: Asmik Ace

Year: 1990

System: MD

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

I hate wrestling games but this one kept my interest for longer than most. And no, not because it's only female wrestlers. Sheesh. The controls are super laggy but the gameplay loop at least makes sense. That's better than most wrestling games. Punch or kick to knock the opponent down and then comes the magic - press down and A or down and B to execute a hold that saps their energy. Do this over and over to weaken them enough that you can pin them. There are other moves like running and jump kicking but all you need are the holds. There's no grappling (thank goodness) and no jumps. So no mashing at all. On the downside, there's an abysmal framerate. It drops to single dogs if you go out of the ring. This makes hit detection even worse than it probably tries to be. But hey, that's par for course in wrestling games, no?

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Every stage is the same. Two modes. The first is exhibition and then there's a tourney style story mode with four circuits which reminds me of Punch Out. The four difficulty levels adds replayability.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Decent presentation for its time. The all girls lineup is different anyway.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Artwork is 8 bit quality but with some frame of animation. Too bad the framerate is so awful.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Not much music and minimal sounds. The stretching noise that plays while you hold an opponent is hilariously bad.

Overall Score: 41
