Daffy Duck in Hollywood
Daffy's Hurt LockerGenre: action - platform
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1994
System: MD PAL
Gameplay Score: 3
Gameplay Notes:
Handles surprisingly well for a licensed title. Extremely simple controls that play well to the audience I think they were targeting - the youngins. It's not perfect - the controls are touch twitchy - but Daffy goes where you tell him to. You've got an op gun that'll take out any enemy with a single shot, and a tall jump. You can duck (haha) to find hidden treasures and passages, and run by holding C. But that's it. No powerups or advanced mechanics. Jump, shoot, run.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Classic Western design philosophy - collect X widgets to open the gate and proceed to the next gated area. Rinse, repeat. In this case you collect a handful of bombs within a roughly 4x4 screen area within 99 seconds. A few collectibles can be found but they only give points and you'll run into them without trying since you have to canvas the area anyway. Needless to say, boredom sets in quickly. It's a shame because the stages themselves have some fun elements and variety. Oh and did I mention the copious leaps of faith and cheap enemy placement?
Theme Score: 4
Theme Notes:
Gotta love Looney Tunes. I'm confused by the Wild West and Graveyard themes, however. What does this have to do with Daffy?
Art Style Score: 4
Art Style Notes:
Amazing sprites and animation. Might even be better than the Bugs Bunny SNES game. Two problems though: horrible visual language for platforms and enemies (they often look near identical background elements), and heavy slowdown. The game even crashed on me a couple of times.
Audio Score: 4
Audio Notes:
Two awesome songs, but they play in every stage and get old quickly. Still, props for some of the best sounding music on the Genesis/Mega Drive.
